What Type Of Acne Scar Do You Have?
Take a look at this list of the different types of acne scars and decide for yourself which type you are
currently dealing with.
Icepick Scars - these acne scars are very deep and narrow in appearance. The skin literally
looks like it was pierced with an icepick or some other type of sharp object and this is how these scars were
named. On different people, these types of acne scars can look like large, open pores instead of a depressed scar.
This type of acne scar develops from an infection or a cyst beneath the skin that destroys the tissue, leaving a
scar.
Boxcar Scars - this specific type of acne scar gives the pitted appearance. The scars are wider
than icepick scars and are round or oval in shape. This type of acne scar is caused by what is known as an
inflammatory breakout that destroys your body’s production of collagen. This in turn leaves the skin and
surrounding area without the support of collagen and this is why they appear pitted and depressed.
Rolling Scars – these acne scars are unique because they create a wave appearance underneath
the skin. The skin on top is seemingly normal in appearance, the scar and damage is actually underneath the
superficial layer of skin. These acne scars are not nearly as common as the first two mentioned here but they do
occur.
Keloid Scars – this acne scar is raised and often sits on the top of the skin, looking like a
large mass of skin and can be mistaken for a mole or birth mark. This type of acne scar has the potential to grow
larger over time, expanding way past the original wound. These scars are most commonly found on men and more on the
torso than on the face. Keloid scars are developed from an over production of collagen rather than a loss of
collagen and tissue like the others listed above.
Now that you have a better idea as to what types of acne scar you may be dealing with, you can now begin
searching for the right treatment plan for you. Each of these scars should be treated uniquely whether with creams
and ointments or with more intense treatment options such as laser therapy or microdermabrasion.
It is important to keep in mind that even within a certain types of acne
scars, there are different degrees of severity and some scars may respond to over the counter creams where
others require more in depth options.
